I PONTI SUL PO – THE BRIDGES ON THE PO (ita – eng)
Torino è divisa in due dal fiume più importante d’Italia: il Po. Nella città sono presenti 7 ponti che uniscono la parte pianeggiante alla collina. 3 di loro, oltre ad essere gioielli architettonici, hanno una loro storia.
Il Ponte di Pietra – oggi Ponte Vittorio Emanuele I
Il primo vero ponte di Torino, fu voluto da Napoleone I, che capì l’importanza di sostituire ponti provvisori a vere e proprie infrastrutture. La posa della prima pietra avvenne nel 1810. Il più fedelmente conservato dei ponti cittadini, collega oggi piazza Vittorio alla Chiesa della Gran Madre. Tornati i Savoia in città, il lungimirante re Vittorio Emanuele I decise di mantenere il ponte simbolo dell’occupazione napoleonica dandogli però il suo nome. A lui è anche dedicata la statua dinnanzi alla chiesa neoclassica che volge lo sguardo verso la piazza aldilà del fiume.
Particolarità: murate nel pilastro centrale del ponte furono riposte 88 fra monete e medaglie commemorative delle campagne napoleoniche e un metro in lastra d’argento. Il ponte fu completato nel 1813, esso ha una lunghezza complessiva di 150 metri per 5 arcate.
Umberto I
Il ponte che oggi unisce corso Vittorio Emanuele II e Corso Moncalieri in corrispondenza di Borgo Crimea, fu costruito per sostituire il vecchio ponte metallico sospeso, struttura metallica con cavi d’acciaio. Il nuovo ponte fu inaugurato nel 1907 e dedicato al re Umberto I vittima di un attentato nel 1900. Al progetto a tre campate (30-32-30 metri) furono aggiunti come ornamento, qualche anno dopo, quattro gruppi scultorei allegorici: la Pietà e il Valore su corso Vittorio Emanuele II e l’Arte e l’Industria sul lato di corso Fiume.
Principessa Isabella
Il ponte Isabella deve il suo nome a Isabella, principessa di Baviera che sposò Tommaso di Savoia. Unisce oggi unisce corso Dante con corso Moncalieri. Fu costruito tra il 1876 e il 1880, su progetto di Ernesto Ghiotti in un periodo di notevole espansione edilizia a ridosso del Po e della collina. Esprime la sua eleganza nelle cinque armoniose arcate, nella sua bicromia tra il rosso mattone dei timpani e il bianco della pietra nelle pile di sostegno e nei rosoni ornamentali, nonché nel raffinato disegno del parapetto e dei lampioni in ghisa, purtroppo sostituiti nella seconda metà del Novecento.
Turin is divided in two by the most important river in Italy: the Po. In the city there are 7 bridges that join the flat part to the hill. Three of them, besides being architectural jewels, they have their own story.
Ponte di Pietra – today Vittorio Emanuele I Bridge
Napoleon I, who understood the importance of replacing temporary bridges to real infrastructures, wanted this first real bridge. The laying of the first stone took place in 1810. The most faithfully preserved of the city bridges, today connects Piazza Vittorio to the Church of the Gran Madre. When the Savoy returned to the city, the farsighted King Vittorio Emanuele I decided to keep the bridge symbol of the Napoleonic occupation, but giving it its name. Also to the statue in front of the neoclassical church that turns his gaze to the square beyond the river is dedicated to the king.
Particularities: in the central pillar of the bridge were placed 88 coins and commemorative medals of the Napoleonic campaigns and a meter in silver plate. The bridge was completed in 1813, it has a total length of 150 meters for 5 arches.
Umberto I
The bridge that today joins Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and Corso Moncalieri at Borgo Crimea was built to replace the old suspended metal bridge, a metal structure with steel cables. The new bridge was inaugurated in 1907 and it was dedicated to King Umberto I, the victim of an attack in 1900. Some years later were added to three-span project (30-32-30 meters) four allegorical sculptural groups: the Pietà and the Value on corso Vittorio Emanuele II and the Art and Industry on the side of corso Fiume.
Princess Isabella
The Isabella bridge owes its name to Isabella, princess of Bavaria who married Thomas of Savoy. Today it joins Corso Dante with Corso Moncalieri. It was built between 1876 and 1880, designed by Ernesto Ghiotti during a period of considerable expansion between the Po and the hills. It expresses its elegance on the five harmonious arches, on its duotone between the brick red of the eardrums and the white of the stone in the supporting stacks and ornamental rosettes, as well as in the refined design of the parapet and the cast iron street lamps, unfortunately replaced during the second half of the twentieth century.
