Il 28 dicembre 1895 nasce l’arte cinematografica per opera dei fratelli francesi Lumière che proiettavano, a Parigi, brevi filmati. La vicinanza con la Francia permette a Torino di continuare questa esperienza.

Nei primi anni del Novecento sorgono in città i primi studi e si registra un fiorire di attività dal carattere industriale, montato dalle cronache mondane. Si spostano a Torino diversi attori francesi e si imitano i prodotti di maggior successo, il centro città diventa luogo di incontro per registi, soggettisti e primi divi. I film torinesi sono apprezzati in tutto il mondo, godono di una grande fama di divertimento tanto che, nella seconda decade del novecento, la città diventa uno dei punti di riferimento mondiale per la nuova arte delle immagini in movimento, ancora non dotati di audio.

E’ necessario, però, rilevare che il cinema soffre di un complesso di inferiorità nei confronti delle forme nobili di spettacolo come il teatro, poiché è concepita come una forma industriale di spettacolo, la via della riabilitazione passa attraverso il denaro. E del denaro sa servirsi Giovanni Pastrone, che nel budget di “Cabiria” (il primo kolossal della storia del cinema muto datata 1914) per la cifra astronomica di un milione di lire dell’epoca, ottiene che il film risulti firmato da Gabriele D’Annunzio, il più famoso uomo di cultura dell’epoca, che si limita in realtà a supervisionare le didascalie ed inventare i nomi dei personaggi. Il film richiede quasi un anno di lavorazione e coinvolge 20.000 comparse. La città assiste entusiasta alla lavorazione del film, le proiezioni sono un successo in tutto il mondo. Lo star system maschile è popolato da uomini dalle spiccate doti atletiche, mentre quello femminile accentua al massimo la recitazione, traducendo sugli schermi l’ideale femminile del tempo, donna sospesa tra sensualità e morte.

In occasione dei XX Giochi Olimpici di Torino 2006 è stato realizzato un restauro del film nel Museo del Cinema, all’interno della Mole Antonelliana. Nel 2015, in contemporanea con il XXXIV TFF (Torino Film Festival) è stata presentata la prima edizione del “Premio Cabiria”; il premio vuole essere un riconoscimento a un regista, un attore o un’attrice che si siano distinti per la loro attività nel corso dell’anno con il loro contributo per l’arte cinematografica.

For the astronomical sum of one million liras the film is signed by Gabriele D ‘ Annunzio, the most famous cultural man who at the end just supervises the captions and invents character names. The film requires nearly a year of work and involves 20,000 extras. The city assists excited to the creation of on the film, the projections are a hit around the world. The star system is populated by male with strong athletic ability, while the female emphasizes to the full acting, translating through the screen the feminine ideal of the time, woman suspended between sensuality and death.

For the XX Olympic Games in Turin in 2006 a restoration of the film was made in the Museum of Cinema, inside the Mole Antonelliana. In 2015, simultaneously with XXXIV TFF (Turin Film Festival) the first edition of “Cabiria Award” was presented; the prize is an acknowledgment to a director, an actor or actress who have distinguished themselves for their activities during the year with their contribution to the art of film.
